Zoella’s ‘Girl Online’ Controversy

This is just going to be quick post on what I think about the controversy surrounding Zoe Sugg, or more commonly known as Zoella’s book, ‘Girl Online’. As you have all probably heard by now Zoe herself and Penguin, the books publishing company, have confirmed that there was a ghost-writer who really wrote the book. Zoe though claims that the characters and story were all her creation.

With the release of this news people rushed to the internet with mostly hate toward Zoe. Because of this Zoe tweeted that she would be taking a break from the internet for a few days and instantly everyone started talking about how she was quitting YouTube for good. Ridiculous, right?

I personally don’t think that ghost-writing is right. But the truth is ghost-writing is not illegal and most celebrities use ghost-writers for their books though they hardly ever get this much hate for it. Even earlier this year Kendall and Kylie Jenner released a Young Adult book which turned out to be ghost written yet there was almost zero fuss about it. Unlike a lot of other celebrities though Zoe played quite a big part in writing the novel. She said that she came up with the characters and plot of the book and after reading the book myself I can definitely believe that. Penny does remind me a lot like Zoe and the overall story does have the feel of something that Zoe would come up with. Although this isn’t definite proof that she came up with the characters and story, from what I know about her I’m willing to give her the benefit of the doubt.

One of the main themes in her book is that you shouldn’t judge people from what you hear about them online. I feel like this is the perfect example of what is going on now. Many articles have pointed out that the books publishing company, Penguin, is more to blame then Zoe herself. For all we know the publishing company may have asked her to not tell her viewers about the book being ghost-written so that it would make more sales. If this was the case then I really don’t think we should be hating on Zoe. And until we do have the full story, which I doubt we ever will, we shouldn’t immediately rush to conclusions and hate on Zoella. I know a lot of YouTubers have recently been signed up with the publishing company Penguin to write their books. And to be honest it wouldn’t surprise me if the contract these YouTubers signed said that they needed a ghost-writer. So as I said we should wait until we have the full story.

My favourite quote from her book, ‘Girl Online’ is something the main character Penny wrote on her blog. She said “Every time you post something online you have a choice. You can either make it something that adds to the happiness levels in the world- or you can make it something that takes away.” I think this quote is definitely true and it’s a shame that so many people forget it especially when posting hateful and rude comments toward Zoella or anyone else for that matter. All I hope is that this will eventually get better and that just maybe this post added just a little to the happiness levels in the world 🙂

  1. Hiya, I just wanted to say thank you for linking to my article! I’m glad you liked it. Also, you’re definitely right to point out that no one else seems to receive the criticism for using ghostwriters as Zoe has. Regardless of your opinions on Zoe, Youtubers, or the book, you can’t blame Zoe for doing what anyone else in her situation would do, and do all the time.
